What to Expect

During the Cleanse

In holistic cleansing, healing is often compared to peeling an onion. As we peel though the layers of our illnesses, we often discover deep or older issues. This is very similar to counseling. You may go to see a counselor for panic attacks. After you learn to relax and develop skills to keep anxiety at bay, you may discover these feelings come from some deep past trauma.

Holistic cleansing is similar. Patients are amazed, bewildered and sometimes even frightened when they begin to experience symptoms of an illness from years before. As our bodies start to release toxins stored deep in our tissues, emotions and symptoms of past illnesses may resurface. In natural healing, this is called, “Working out the old illness.” Most illnesses are never really completely cured. Most people usually take a medication that suppresses the symptoms and so most Americans continue to add new layers of illness over these old imbalances. You can imagine how many layers of imbalances people have by the time they are in middle age.

When the body undergoes a healthy holistic cleanse process, it will release all the memory and imbalance of the disease. It is a unique aspect of natural healing that western medicine does not quite yet understand. We have to go deep into our bodies to remove these old patterns so that new tissues and healing can begin.

One elderly gentleman who suffered from polio as a child had never really regained his health when I met him a few years ago. In the second week of the Four Winds Holistic Cleanse, he began experiencing an array of symptoms that reminded him of his suffering from polio. As is usual with detox, his symptoms were much less severe then in the past. His body was cleansing away the old diseased tissues and releasing the immune system pattern of that illness. After about five days, everything returned to normal. When the cleanse was over, he felt a renewed sense of vitality he had not felt since the age of 16. The memories also created a great deal of emotional release which greatly helped his chronic depression.

Another patient suffered from severe pleurisy as a child. He began experiencing the same pleurisy-like symptoms during his first cleanse. Interestingly, he also released a great deal of childhood fears he carried around all his life ever since his struggles.

I’m sure that no one wants to experience past disease symptoms, but fear not. This flaring up of old disease symptoms is just the disease leaving the body. It is the body’s way of communicating that this pattern is gone or the layer of illness is released. Pete Medicine Eagle, the medicine man I studied with, has often said that, “It is the last attempt of the disease to fight for its life.” It is really a wonderful blessing because it represents the disease truly leaving all traces of itself from the body.
